Horse owners throughout the country are helping workers with a developmental disability while protecting their animals in case of an emergency.
The VSI Vet Kit is the first of several self-contained, weather-resistant first aid kits designed with input from professional veterinarians and horse lovers. Containing the most-recommended items to care for a horse during an emergency, Vet Kit is compact enough to fit under a car seat or in a saddle bag.
Vet Kit was designed after a trail accident became serious because no convenient first aid was on hand. A long-time horse lover saw this need and after consulting with veterinarians and other horse owners, designed the Vet Kit as a way to treat minor injuries in the field and stabilize serious wounds before transportation to professional help. Popular demand brought additional special kits, the Trail Kit (in regular, Deluxe and Mini versions), Barn Kit and Foal Kit. Each contains a comprehensive Care Card and is double sealed to ensure that contents are available when they are needed.
Vocational Services Inc. is a Liberty, Mo., not-for-profit corporation that provides employment and other opportunities for individuals with a developmental disability. A 30-year-old organization, VSI began these quality first-aid kits in 1993 to expand and ensure opportunities as traditional jobs were increasingly lost to international competition. A major "by-product" has been the enjoyment that workers receive when their handiwork is on display at pet stores and other locations.
VSI Executive Director Randy Hylton said the positive reception awarded Vet Kit by television, magazines and horse lovers nationally has been gratifying. "We worked very hard to design a quality product that would meet the needs of pet owners," he said. "But it's also gratifying that the work of our employees have been so well received. That's very exciting."
